Hundreds of people in Wichita are waiting on SNAP benefits as the Kansas Department of Children and Families works through a backlog. Reported on September 1, 2026, DCF was said to be 57 days behind and still processing July benefits, with the agency citing new state and federal laws and staffing shortages.
A Kansas news report published August 15, 2026, said more than 32,000 Kansans have lost food assistance since new SNAP laws took effect, including nearly 7,000 in July 2026 alone. Advocates and state officials said overlapping federal and state requirements increased paperwork burdens, contributing to delayed benefits, failed recertifications, and unexpected terminations.
Kansas SUN Bucks applications for children who are not automatically eligible must be submitted by 5 p.m. on August 31, 2026. SUN Bucks provides a one-time $120 grocery benefit per eligible child and can be used where SNAP EBT is accepted.
